About the retreats

A retreat with Livemindfully is a unique opportunity to consciously step away from the external stimuli and distractions of daily life, including verbal communication and digital devices. It’s a dedicated time and space designed to help you turn your attention inward, fostering a deeper connection with yourself and the present moment. Both our Full Silent Meditation and Silent Walking retreats offer a supportive, structured environment where silence is a key element. This intentional quietude is a powerful tool that supports profound self-reflection, heightens awareness, and allows a deep sense of peace to emerge. You’ll be gently guided by Ellen in mindfulness and Vipassana meditation practices, all within tranquil natural settings.

Practicing silence offers numerous benefits for our well-being. By reducing external verbal communication and noise, we create space for our minds to settle and our nervous systems to calm. This can lead to reduced stress, increased self-awareness, heightened clarity of thought, and a deeper connection to our inner feelings and intuition. Silence allows us to observe our habitual thought patterns more clearly and provides a profound opportunity for rest, insight, and inner peace.

Absolutely. Our retreats welcome both those new to meditation and silent retreats, as well as experienced practitioners. The most important factor is a genuine motivation to explore silence, engage in the practices offered, and be open to your inner experience. Ellen provides expert, approachable guidance suitable for all levels, ensuring a supportive environment for everyone.

It’s quite natural to have concerns about an extended period of silence, especially if it’s your first time. Many people experience some initial restlessness. Ellen is there to provide support and guidance. The retreat is structured to gently ease you into silence, and the practices are designed to help you work with any challenges that arise. Remember, the aim isn’t to achieve a perfectly “empty” mind, but to cultivate awareness and self-compassion.

Group sizes vary to ensure a quality experience for each retreat type:

Our Full Silent Meditation Retreats typically host between 12 to 20 participants.

Our Silent Walking Retreats are more intimate, with groups of 3 to 6 participants.

Yes, the daily schedule for both retreat types includes dedicated periods for personal free time. This allows for rest, quiet reflection, journaling, or simply enjoying the peaceful surroundings and nature. Beyond this structured free time, while the retreat offers a supportive daily rhythm, the program is also designed with flexibility in mind. We encourage you to listen to your own needs, and you are welcome to skip scheduled sessions if you feel that is what’s best for your wellbeing and inner process during the retreat.

Ellen is committed to creating a safe, compassionate, and deeply supportive space for all participants. While the retreat environment encourages inner resourcing, Ellen is an experienced guide available for support should significant emotional challenges arise during your practice. There may also be opportunities for brief, mindful check-ins if needed, depending on the retreat structure.

Both retreats are rooted in silence and Vipassana meditation guided by Ellen, offering a path to inner peace and self-discovery. However, they provide distinct experiences:

  • The Full Silent Meditation Retreat emphasizes traditional, deep immersion with extended periods of both sitting and walking meditation in a dedicated retreat centre (Casas Benali). It includes daily Dharma talks to support your practice and is ideal for those wishing to dive deeply into formal silent meditation.

  • The Silent Walking Retreat uniquely integrates meditation with extensive movement in nature. This practice, often referred to as Yatra (a mindful, sacred journey or pilgrimage on foot))], involves approximately 3 to 4 hours of silent hikes daily through the stunning Spanish landscape, with planned breaks for rest and reflection. The experience is complemented by gentle morning yoga to prepare the body, dedicated freetime blocks, and evening sharings to connect and integrate experiences (while the core walking and meditation periods are in silence). This retreat is about finding stillness and insight while actively engaging with your surroundings, often in a more intimate, smaller group setting

About the practices

Vipassana, often translated as “insight” or “clear-seeing” meditation, is a traditional Buddhist practice that cultivates mindful awareness of our present moment experiences without judgment. Through systematic observation of sensations, thoughts, and emotions as they arise and pass, Vipassana helps us understand the nature of our minds, develop wisdom, and free ourselves from unhelpful patterns, leading to greater peace and equanimity.

Mindfulness, as it’s widely practiced today for well-being, has deep roots in ancient contemplative traditions, particularly Buddhist practices like Vipassana. Vipassana is a specific meditative path and set of techniques designed to systematically cultivate and deepen mindfulness—which is the quality of paying attention to the present moment, intentionally and without judgment. So, while mindfulness is the awareness itself, Vipassana provides a structured way to develop that mindful awareness to achieve profound insight (clear seeing).

Mindfulness is highly effective for burnout and stress because it trains our ability to anchor ourselves in the present moment, rather than being caught in cycles of anxious thoughts about the past or future. This practice helps to:

  • Reduce Rumination: By allowing us to observe our thoughts without getting swept away by them.
  • Improve Emotional Regulation: By creating a pause between a trigger and our response, allowing for calmer, more conscious reactions to stressors.
  • Soothe the Nervous System: Regular mindfulness can help shift the body’s response from “fight-or-flight” (stress) to “rest-and-digest” (calm).
  • Increase Self-Awareness: It helps us recognize early signs of stress or burnout, enabling us to make more supportive choices for our well-being. Ellen’s training as an MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) trainer also deeply informs our approach to managing stress through these practices.

Samadhi refers to a state of concentrated calm and mental collectedness, often translated as “concentration” or “calming of the mind.” In our retreats, practices that cultivate Samadhi help to stabilize and quiet the mind, creating a foundation of inner stillness that supports the development of clear insight (Vipassana).

No, previous experience in Vipassana meditation is not required. Our retreats are open to everyone, from complete beginners to those with an established practice. Ellen provides clear instruction and guidance suitable for all levels, emphasizing your willingness to engage with the practice.

he yoga offered during our retreats is a gentle session, typically in the morning, designed to help you warm up and connect with your body. It is not a specific, dynamic style of yoga but rather focuses on mindful movement and gentle stretching to prepare and support your body for periods of meditation. It is suitable for all levels of experience and physical ability.

Dharma talks are insightful discourses offered by Ellen, drawing from Buddhist psychology, mindfulness principles, and her extensive personal and teaching experience. These talks aim to provide context, inspiration, and practical wisdom to support your meditation practice and help you understand your experiences on retreat. They often cover themes relevant to inner exploration, emotional well-being, and integrating mindfulness into daily life.

Accomodation & location

Casas Benali is a unique and serene retreat venue, reminiscent of a small, peaceful village nestled in the Spanish mountains. Accommodation is provided in 4 or 5 distinct apartments, offering a mix of comfortable single and double rooms, many with ensuite facilities. The venue features multiple outdoor ‘chill spaces’ perfect for quiet relaxation and reflection, a large, always-accessible main room ideal for our group meditation sessions, and a swimming pool for unwinding during your free time.

Our Silent Walking Retreats offer an intimate experience, typically based in charming, modernly renovated ‘casitas’ (tiny Spanish countryside houses) nestled in a tranquil local valley, right in the heart of breathtaking Spanish nature. This setting allows for a profound connection with the natural world. A small, simple house often serves as the central base for our walks, offering a quiet, green environment free from traffic, streetlights, or internet, ensuring an atmosphere of enormous peace. You’ll enjoy comfortable, simple accommodation designed to be a peaceful haven, where you can wake up with the songs of birds and go to bed with the stars in the sky, fully embracing the sunny Spanish climate.

We offer a variety of comfortable room options to suit different preferences:

  • For Full Silent Meditation Retreats at Casas Benali, you can choose between private single rooms and shared double rooms, many with ensuite facilities.
  • For Silent Walking Retreats, accommodation is typically in cozy tiny houses or bell tents, shared with a maximum of two other participants. A private single room option is often available at an extra cost for these retreats as well. For all retreats, if you have a preference for a single room or a specific sharing arrangement, please mention this when booking or inquire early, as availability can be limited.

What is the general atmosphere and environment like at your retreat locations?

Both our retreat locations are chosen for their deep immersion in the beautiful Spanish countryside, offering a genuine escape.

  • For the Full Silent Meditation Retreats, Casas Benali is exceptionally secluded, set within 68 hectares of private mountainous land, ensuring profound peace with no traffic or internet disturbances.

At both, expect fresh air, stunning vistas, rich local flora, and abundant opportunities to connect with the restorative power of the natural world during your stay.

The experience of visiting a beautiful local waterfall differs with each retreat type:

  • For our Full Silent Meditation Retreats, we often organize an optional bonus trip to a stunning nearby waterfall after the retreat officially concludes. This offers a wonderful way to gently transition, further enjoy the scenery, and share a relaxed moment if you choose to join. Details are provided during this retreat.
  • For our Silent Walking Retreats, a visit to a spectacular local waterfall is an integral part of one of the day’s mindful hikes and is included in the program.
